FFT Update 1.2

Hello everyone!

In the previous devlog I mentioned how I wanted to make a "few more tweaks" to this game, so here are the "tweaks" and an important new feature!

Some things I added were:

  • A new "Flower notes" feature
  • Randomized bonus missions given to you by the Architect
  • Water count in game (added in 1.25)
  • and an updated version of the red colour palette

Flower notes

One thing I noticed during the making of Eau de Parfum (another pico-8 game that I made which you can play right here), I realized that Flowers For Time didn't have any colourblind support.

Usually, you can tell what you've planted by looking at the screen because each flower has a different corresponding colour to them (thyme is green, sage is pink, and hydrangea is orange), but those who are colour-blind may not be able to know the difference between these  colours, and because of this, they won't be able to know what flowers they've planted.

This is why I decided to add a "Flower notes" item in your inventory at the start of the game. You can see it in this gif below:

When you look at your "Flower notes", you'll be able keep track of the number of...

  • thymes you planted and watered
  • sages you planted and watered
  • and hydrangeas you planted and watered *on the current floor*

This way, even those who may not be able to tell what they've planted can do so by looking at the "Flower notes" item.

It keeps track of what's been currently planted and watered. Here's a demonstration in this gif:

Randomized bonus missions

Whilst the objective of the game is to escape the watchtower, to get a slightly better ending than the good ending, if you read the architect's letter (it's listed as The Letter Pt.2 in your inventory) it used to say...

If you have the time, bring me two thymes and four hydrangeas.

Now that text has changed! Instead, every single game, the extra "bonus mission" will be randomized but these rules will be in place

  • the architect can request anything  from 1-4 thymes
  • the architect can request anything from 2-5 sages
  • the architect can request anything from 3-6 hydrangeas

Check it out in this gif below:

Water count in game

This was a recent suggestion that came to mind so I decided to add a "water count". Previously, you could see your water count only if you opened your inventory. A friend suggested that it may be easier to see it in menu next to the timer as well as your health. So I decided to make that change! Take a look below:

Updated colour palette

This is probably the least significant of the changes but the red colour palette looks (in my opinion) slightly better now!

I think that the "blueish" background helps everything become a lot clearer! Also, because of the "Flower notes" feature that's been implemented, now (with this colour palette) you'll be able to tell what you've planted/watered. Previously the sages/hydrangeas had the exact same colour (to adhere to the colour guide) but now, it can do that whilst still making the game playable (so that you can keep track of what you've done).

The future?

Believe it or not, there is actually something planned for this game that's going to be  very exciting! I'd rather not say anything now (and it won't change this main game that you can play) but it means a lot to me and I hope to see you then!

Thank you so much for playing/downloading Flowers For Time!
